Long Live the Grover Pickers

November 9, 2020

LSU football coach Ed Orgeron said in September that he figured his whole team had already had covid, so the Tigers were therefore prepared to get through the full SEC football season.

Except…

LSU has another covid breakout and had to cancel/postpone this week’s game against Alabama.

And…

If all or most of the Tigers did have covid at some point,  you have to wonder if the lingering side effects of the illness contribute to the decline of 5 Star recruits because, boy, has LSU sucked…

And….

Now even Ed Orgeron would have to admit that catching covid twice is easier than winning the SEC twice.

But…

At least Ed Orgeron hasn’t yet looked this stupid…

On a happier note….

If you are reading this, there is a GREAT chance you will be around tomorrow morning when College Gameday is live from …. The Masters. That feels like the the kind of site gag you would see in Airplane! or the baseball announcer booth scene in Naked Gun 2 1/2, but here we are! The only one missing is Dr. Joyce Brothers!

You’ve lived long enough to see Purdue v Northwestern become the most important Big10 game on a November weekend. Both undefeated and utterly unmemorable unless you are a recent grad. If covid has taught us anything, it’s that global pandemic can be a winning football strategy.

You’ve lived long enough to see Indiana in the top 10 for football, which must especially hurt if you root for a school that actually cares about football, such as Michigan, Tennessee or Nebraska.

You’ve lived long enough to see Liberty enter a game 7-0 against a team, Western Carolina, playing its FIRST game of the season!

You will never live long enough to see the Jets play in a Super Bowl.

We’ve somehow reached a point in the history of football where it’s a little disappointing that Coastal Carolina’s game is cancelled this weekend and we have to wait another week to see if the Chants can extend their record to 8-0.

You’ve finally seen the day when UCLA and Cal can spend all week preparing to play Utah and Arizona State, only to have those games cancelled on Thursday and then a game BETWEEN UCLA and Cal scheduled on Friday to kickoff 48 hours later on a Sunday.

North Dakota State, defending FCS Champions, remain 1-0 and have completed their season.

Some of you will have lived long enough to see BYU go undefeated and inexplicably challenge for a SECOND National Title. As an aside, if you see BYU win two national titles before you see Book of Mormon twice, you are living your life wrong.

If you live long enough you might see a day when FSU cracks the top 5 again and has an outsider’s chance of making the ACC Championship Game, but you are going to have to eat right, exercise daily, take a lot of vitamins, and have great genes to make it that long.

You’ve lived long enough to see college football programs actually NOT have enough money to buy out coaches they want to fire. Congratulations Will Muschamp, Chip Kelley, Derek Mason, and Gus Malzahn! You are surviving BECAUSE of covid.

The world record for longest living human is by Jeanne Calment, who lived 122 years, 164 days. She saw a lot of things in her time, but even 122 years may not be enough if you are waiting for the day when Miami, Nebraska, Michigan, Texas and maybe Tennessee are actually ‘Back’ and in a college football playoff.

When Tom Brady turns 122, he’ll be celebrating his centennial season as an NFL quarterback. He’ll be starting for the expansion Sao Paulo Beachgods in the AFC South America division playing against the great grandson of Patrick Mahomes and Eli Manning, IX.

Nebraska fans, I hope you live long enough to see the Cornhuskers move back to the Big8 where they belong.   Big Red needs to be with schools it can compete with in football, like Texas and Oklahoma. Right now,  the Big10’s best- Northwestern, Purdue, and Indiana– are just too much for the once proud Huskers.

If you live another 520  Saturdays, will that be enough for you to see South Carolina score meaningful points in the fourth quarter just once?

The NFL remains impervious/undeterred by the covid and only a little concerned about Sunday at the Masters.

Rake your leaves early, wash the car and maybe clean out your email, or, watch the final round of the Masters, but get it done before the 4pm games.

Dolphins v Chargers

I’ve written much here about the evil of the San Diego Chargers and the ill Rolf Benirschke brought to this world in 1981 against the Miami Dolphins.

Bygones. These are the Los Angeles Chargers. Let’s start over.

Is Tua better than Justin Herbert. Is Justin Herbert better than Tua. This game will answer the question, once and for all time. The winner immediately ascends to ‘elite’ status and the loser becomes the next Joe Flacco. There is no other way.

Cardinals v Bills

Kyler Murray v Josh Allen is like a foosball v a bowling ball.

Also, to improve the game, Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins is suggesting that all yards gained by defensive pass interference calls should be credited to the wide receiver yardage totals (and I’ll assume the QB’s also).

THAT is airline level revenue stream development nonsense right there. That’s charging extra for peanuts, it’s giving you an assigned seat that reclines for just $25 more, or guaranteeing delivery of you AND your luggage to the intended airport for as little as $250 above the peasant class fare. I’m impressed and I’m all for it as soon as I get DeAndre Hopkins on my fantasy team.

Rams v Seahawks

Great uniforms for both. DK Metcalfe is must watch TV, as are Russell Wilson and the Rams’ Aaron Donald. Unless one of those golfers makes another hole-in-one on 16 by skipping the ball on the water and rolling it up the green in the shape of a bass clef until the ball drops in the cup, this football game will give you the best highlight of the weekend.

And let’s rejoice in the truth that Wilson and Metcalfe are entirely capable of making whatever the football equivalent is of Jon Rham’s ridiculous golf shot. (and yes, this video is from a “Turkish Public Broadcast Service”, which is the exclusive provider of Grover Picks Golf Video.)

Here’s hoping we all live long enough to see all of it!

Happy Picking ,
The Commissioner
